Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary
About the Sanctuary Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary, well nestled amidst the Aravali Hills spreads over an area of 765.80 sq.kms. The varied landscape of Sanctuary is dominated by grasslands, dry deciduous forests, mountain cliffs, rocky outcrops and narrow valleys. The sanctuary houses the ruins of Garh-Rajor temples built in between the 10th and 11th centuries. A 17th century castle situated on a hilltop at Kankwari, offers the breathtaking views of flying Egyptian vultures and eagles. Sariska was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1955 and it became a National Park in 1979. In addition to wildlife watching, Sariska offers other options like camel safari, shopping in nearby places and a close look of the medieval structures. Entry Rs 25 for each person, additional charges for cameras (about Rs 10) and vehicles (Rs 100 for a minibus & Rs 75 for jeeps and cars). Major Wildlife Attractions Around 90 per cent area of the sanctuary is dotted with Dhak trees, which
provide accommodation to a large number of wildlife species.Wildlife : Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a wide variety wild animals such as Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog, Jungle Cat, Hyena, Jackal, Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Four-horned antelope, Wild Boa and Langur. The wildlife sanctuary is famous for its large population of Rhesus Monkeys. The Siliserh Lake situated on the edge of park houses large number of Crocodiles. Bird Species : The wildlife sanctuary houses largest population of Peafowl in the country. Other famous bird species available in the sanctuary are Bush Quail, Grey Partridge, Tree Pie, Sand Grouse, Crested Serpent Eagle, Golden-Backed Wood Pecker and the Great Indian Horned Owl. Other Attractions Kankwari Fort : Situated within the sanctuary, the this is a historical structure. It is the place where Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb imprisoned his brother Dara Sikoh. Sariska
Palace : Built by Marahrajas of Alwar, the palace is located
within the wildlife sanctuary. Once the royal reserve of the rulers of
Alwar, the palace is now converted into a hotel.Ancient Shiva Temples : The Shiva Temples dating back to the 6th -13th century is a must visit place. The temples now in ruins, offer a wonderful sight to the visitors. Jeep Safari : Jeep Safari is the best way to explore the wildlife of Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. The safari can be arranged at the Forest Reception Office situated on Jaipur Road. Jeep Safaris provides an excellent opportunity for wildlife watching and photography. How to reach there By Air : Nearest airport Jaipur, which is 107 kms away from Sariska. Jaipur airport is connected to major cities of the country. By Rail : Alwar, 37 kms from Sariska is the nearest railhead. By Road : The wildlife sanctuary is situated on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. Sariska is also well connected with Alwar and other important places of Rajasthan. Where to Stay Accommodation facilities are available outside the sanctuary.
