Ranthambore is a major tourist destination of Rajasthan, situated 11 Kms from Sawai Madhpur and 145 Kms from Jaipur. Ranthambore was the favourite hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Jaipur until 1955, when it was declared a game sanctuary. ToDay the place is famous for its tiger reserve, but it offers much more for sightseeing and excursions. Situated on the edge of the Thar Desert, Ranthambore is surrounded by the Aravali and Vindhya hills. Ranthambore has the advantage of having mysterious desert lands as well as plain area near the surrounding hills.


Ranthambore - A Heritage Site
Ranthambore has been categorized as a Heritage Site, because of having the ruins of the magnificent fort overlooking the park. The park is dotted with lake palaces, chhataris, old fortifications and a majestic fort dating back to 1,000 years. Ranthambore National Park is known for housing the Jogi Mahal and the Padam Talab. Besides the park is famous for the Royal Bengal Tigers, which can be seen around the lakes, watering holes, moving in the forest or resting in the ruined fort.

Ranthambore National Park
One of the most famous wildlife reserves in the world, the Park is located in eastern Rajasthan. Ranthambore was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1995 and became a part of Project Tiger in 1973. Ranthambore National Park is situated at the meeting point of the Aravali and Vindhya hills. The park is bounded by river Chambal in the South and Banas river in the North. Six man made lakes are the main attractions of the park, while several small streams criss-cross the entire park.

Flora and Fauna in Ranthambore National Park
The park spreads over an area of around 1,300 Sq Kms, has a rich diversity of fauna and flora. The park is home to about 300 trees, 50 aquatic plants, 272 birds, 12 reptiles including the Marsh Crocodile & amphibians and 30 mammals. Ranthambore National Park is known for its Tigers, which makes it a favourite destination in country to observe them closely. Besides the Tiger, the park has a large numbers of Sambhar, Chital, Nilgai, Gazzelle, Boars, Mongoose, Indian Hare and Monitor Lizards etc. The flora of the Park include Banyan Trees, Dhok & Pipal trees, clusters of mango trees crisscrossed with evergreen belts.

Ranthambore Fort
The fort built in 994 A.D. is situated at a height of 200 metres above sea level. The royal past is well-preserved in the ruined pavilions, walls, chhatris and splendid monuments, within the majestic fort. It is believed that the fort is to be the place where the first Jauhar in Rajput history was performed. The fort overlooking the Padam Talab, offers spectacular views of the surroundings. Jungle SafariJogi Mahal
Overlooking the beautiful Padam Talab, the Mahal is the forest rest house. The Mahal has all the facilities for a comfortable stay. The major attraction in the Mahal is the ancient banyan tree, which is believed to be the second largest banyan tree in India.

Ganesh Chaturthi
An 8th century A.D. temple of Lord Ganesha stands on Ranthambore Fort. Every year in the month of August- September thousand of people visit the temple in honour of the Lord Ganesha's birthDay.

Jungle Safari
The parks offers the adventurous activities like Jeep Safari, a cultural and traditional experience with the Meena tribes. For the more adventure enthusiasts a night-out in the hideouts of the park is a unique experience.

Park Visititing Timings
The timings to visit the Park are, Between October To March: 6.00 am - 9.00 am & 3.00 pm - 6.00 pm & Between April To June: 6.30 am - to 9.30 am & 3.30 pm - 6.00 pm.

Excursions
Sawai Madhopur
The village located just 11 Kms from Ranthambore is the gateway to the National Park. Sawai Madhopur was the major centre of the Rajpur rulers. The village is known for its many historical monuments and related legends which can be seen in these small and big structures.

Karauli
The city founded in the year 1348, is famous for its temples and architectural marvels. Blended with history of the Rajputs, the historic monuments of Karauli is known for red sandstone walls, bastions, peripheral wall, six gates and eleven posters. Other attractions include the temple of Madan Mohanji and the annual fair at the Kaila Devi temple.

Bundi
Situated at a distance of 66 Kms from Ranthambore, Bundi is famous for its monuments and its fort. The major attractions in Bundi include the Taragarh fort (built in 1354), the Bhim Burj (the largest battlement) and a huge water reservoir carved out of solid rock. Bundi Palace, which is situated on a hill near Taragarh fort is famous for its traditional murals.

Reaching Ranthambore
The Sawai Madhopur Lodge By Air : Jaipur (145 Kms) is the nearest airport, which has daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Jodhpur.

By Train : The nearest railhead is Sawai Madhopur, which falls on Delhi-Mumbai railway route. Some of the major trains from Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur stop here.

By Bus : Regular bus service connects Ranthambore to Sawai Madhopur. Sawai Madhopur is well connected with all the major cities of Rajasthan. Rajasthan Roadways operates very comfortable deluxe buses from Jaipur to Ranthambore.
