- The city of HavelisBikaner is a city located in north-western Rajasthan, is known for having many sand dunes. The royal fortified city was once the capital of the princely state of Bikaner. The massive palaces and forts, carved intricately in reddish-pink sandstone, bear testimony to its historical and architectural grandeur. Bikaner retains its medieval charm that reflects in the lifestyle of the city. Bikaner commonly called as the camel country, is also famous for its Bhunjia (salted, crispy and spicy edibles). The city is known for the best riding camels in the world. Camel the ship of the desert, is an essential part of people's life here. The colorful markets and bright and cheerful folks make the city more charming. Camel Festival The Camel Festival is organized every year in the month of January, by the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture, Government of Rajasthan. During the festival the folk dances and music of the desert region is performed here. The festival is the best occasion to see the various performances of camels like camel races, camel dances, and the bumpy, neck shaking camel rides etc. Places to Visit in Bikaner The city houses many places of tourist interests like : Junagarh Fort The fort was built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singhji, the sixth ruler of Bikaner. It an unassailable fortress, which was never conquered. The massive fort is surrounded by a moat. The main entrance to the fort is Karan Pol, facing the east direction. Next to the Karan Pol is the Suraj Pol (Sun gate). The fort houses some massive palaces like Anup Mahal, Ganga Niwas and Rang Mahal or palace of pleasure. The fort also houses a temple named as Har Minar lies and a museum. Lalgarh
PalaceIt was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh (1881 AD-1942 AD) in memory of his father Maharaja Lall Singh between 1902 -1926. The palace built in red sandstone is an example of pure Rajput martial architecture. The architectural masterpiece was designed by Sir Swinton Jacob. The Palace has many big halls, lounges, cupolas and pavilions. It has massive pillars, fire mantles, Italian colonnades and motif of lotus in full bloom. The palace also houses a museum and library. The royal family of Bikaner still lives in part of the palace, while a portion is operational as hotel. Prachina Museum The museum was opened by the daughter of present Maharaja Narendra Singh Ji, in October 2000. The museum reminds the rich and glorious past of Bikaner. Prachina is an effort to highlight the aristocratic patronage of Bikaner. Attractions nearby Bikaner Bhandesar Jain Temple The temple located at a distance of 5 Kms from Bikaner, is the oldest temple of Bikaner. The 16th century Jain temple is dedicated to the 13rd Trirthankra. The temple has beautiful mirror work, frescoes and gold leaf paintings. Camel Research Farm The Farm just 8 Kms away from Bikaner, covers an area of 2000 acres. The world's largest Camel research & Breeding center is managed by the central Government. The timing to visit the farm is 15.00hrs to 17.00hrs (Closed on SunDays and government holiDays). Devi Kund Located 8 Kms from Bikaner, this is a royal crematorium with several ornamented cenotaphs (chhataris) built in the memory of the Bika dynasty rulers. The most attractive among them is Maharaja Suraj Singh chhatri, built entirely in white marble with spectacular Rajput painting on the ceiling. Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary The wildlife Sanctuary situated at a distance of 32 Kms from Bikaner lies on the Jaisalmer road. The lush foliage of woods is home to Nilgai, Chinkara, Black buck, Wild boar and folk of imperial sand grouse. Deshnok's Karni Mata Temple Situated
at a distance of 32 Kms from Bikaner, the 600 year old temple is
dedicated to Karni Mata. The temple has magnificent delicately carved
silver gates. The most interesting thing about the temple are the rats
which are regarded as sacred and are fed by priests and devotees.Reaching Bikaner Bikaner has not its own airport but it is well connected by Rail and Road links. Air : The nearest airport from Bikaner Jodhpur (256 Kms), the flights are available from Delhi, Mumbai and other cities to Bikaner. Rail : The Railway Station at Bikaner has few trains to major destinations of the country. The trains are available every Day from Jaipur, Jodhpur and Delhi. Road : There are many express buses from Udaipur, Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Agra & Delhi. The distance of Bikaner from important cities are Delhi (470 Kms), Jaipur (321 Kms), Udaipur (506 Kms), Jaisalmer (333 Kms) and Mumbai (1299 Kms).
