- The Ever Green City of IndiaTrivandrum also known as Thiruvananthapuram, is the capital city of Kerala. Situated on western coast of India, the city is bounded by Tamil Nadu on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Trivandrum is characterized by its undulating terrain of low hills on the coast and wide clean roads and busy commercial markets. Mahatma Gandhi had referred and designated this coastal city as the "Ever Green City of India." Situated amidst the wooded highlands on the Western Ghats, the city boasts of many enchanting picnic spots along the sea shore. Trivandrum is famous worldwide for its beaches, historic monuments and backwater stretches. Trivandrum - A Cultural Heritage Site The city has a rich culture background, as the rulers of Travancore, took a keen interest in development of arts and culture. Trivandrum has produced several renowned artists like Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and Raja Ravi Verma. The city becomes alive during the festive season of Onam usually during August - September. During the festival the state government conducts the tourism week celebrations, in which the cultural events taking place at various centers in the city. Attractions in Trivandrum Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple The ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is situated inside the East Fort. The temple architecture is a blend of the Kerala and Dravidian styles of architecture. One among the 108 sacred Vishnu Temples in India, the temple is famous for its Mural Paintings and Stone Carvings. Kuthiramalika Palace Museum The palace was built by the Travancore King, Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Balarama Varma. Built in the traditional travancore style of architecture, the palace has exquisite wood carvings. The palace museum has the collection of paintings and various important items of the royal family. The Napier Museum The 19th century museum was built in the Indo - Saracenic style. The museum displays archaeological and historic artifacts, bronze idols, ancient ornaments and costumes, a temple chariot and ivory carvings etc. Sree Chitra Art Gallery The Art Gallery is situated close to the Napier Museum. It has the collection of selected paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, Svetlova and Nicholas Roerich and exquisite works from the Rajput, Mughal and Tanjore schools of Art. Varkala
BeachVarkala is famous for beach as well as an important pilgrimage centre of Hindus. The main attractions here are the 2,000 year old Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Centre. Agastyarkoodam Peak This is a spectacular peak in the Western Ghats that rises to a height of about 1868 metre. The peak in the form of sharp cone is accessible only on foot. Excursions Vettukad Church The Churh also known as the 'Madre De Deus' is situated 7 Kms away from Trivandrum. The Vettukad Church attracts people from all religions. The annual celebration here is called the 'Feast Of Christ, The King'. Thiruvallam The serene backwater situated 10 Kms away from Trivandrum is famous for its Canoe Rides. Kovalam Beach The internationally famous beach is located 16 Kms away from Trivandrum. Kovalam consists of three beaches namely the Lighthouse beach, Hawah and Samudra. Aruvikkara Situated at a distance of 16 Kms from Trivandrum, it is both a pilgrimage centre and a picnic spot. It houses a rock cut shrine dedicated to Goddess Bhagvathy. Another attraction is a stream with fishes, which come up to be fed by visitors. Neyyar Dam The dam located 32 Kms away from Trivandrum lies against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats. The beautiful dam along with a lake make an ideal picnic spot. Reaching Trivandrum Air : Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is 6
kms from the city. The airport has direct flights from the Middle
East, Singapore, Maldives and Sri Lanka. The domestic airlines
operates flights for major cities in the country.Rail : The central railway station is located at Thampanoor. Trivandrum is well connected by rail to almost all major cities in India. Road : Trivandym is well connected to all towns & cities across the country. The Central and Inter State bus station is located at Thampanoor. KSRTC Buses are available for all major towns and villages in the State as well as big cities in India. Accommodation in Trivandrum Trivandrum hotels offer plenty of accommodation choices.
