Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary , Kerala
Periyar best known for its wildlife, is situated in the Idukki district of
Kerala. Set amidst the high mountains of the Wetern Ghats, Periyar is a
protected area and a Project Tiger reserve. The protected area covers an
area of 777 Sq Kms, out of which 350 Sq Kms area of the central zone was
developed into the Periyar National Park. The park is also called by the
name Thekkady, which is situated at a distance of 4 Kms from Kumily, 100
Kms from Alappuzha, 110 Kms from Madurai and 120 Kms from Kochi.Flora and Fauna at Periyar The tropical forest area of Periyar has a mixture of deciduous, semi-evergreen tall trees and a closed canopy. Periyar boasts of a rich fauna, flora and birds. About 40 tigers, 20 leopards, 900 elephants, over 100 species of butterfly and at least 240 species of birds inhabit the area. Periyar is mainly a Tiger reserve, but it is really popular for its wild elephants and 100 year old artificial lake. The herds of elephant and sambar, nilgiri langoor, nilgiri tahr, bison, antelope, gaur, deer and wild pigs can be seen wandering down to the lakeside. During summers the animals can be seen bathing and swimming in the reservoir. Places to Visit in and Around Periyar Kumily Kumily is a plantation town, situated on the outskirts of the Periyar Sanctuary. The town is an important shopping center as well as a spice trade centre. Kumily is the main bus station and it offers most of the medium range accommodation in the Periyar region. Tribal Villages The tribal villages around Periyar are worth a visit. The tribal people are involved in fishing and farming, while some are engaged in the traditional practice of collecting honey. The tribals have built interesting tree dwellings, which are comfortable watchtowers for looking wild pigs or elephants, that might ruin their cultivated fields. Murikkady Murikkady is located close to Periyar and famous for its cardamom, coffee and pepper plantations. Pandikuzhi Situated between Chellarkovil and the Tamil Nadu State border, Pandikuzhi is a popular picnic spot. Boat Cruises Boat
cruises is the best way to explore the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The
Periyar Lake is an excellent boating spot for tourists. While boating
one can spot the animals like Elephants, Wild Boar and Sambar Deer
etc.Cradomom Hills The beautiful Cardamom hills of Kerala can be best explored from Periyar. Periyar River The river is one of major rivers of Kerala, with a length of 225 Kms. It originates in the Western Ghats near the border of Tamil Nadu and flows through the Periyar National Park into Periyar Lake. Reaching Periyar Air : Cochin (200 Kms) and Madurai (140 Kms) are the nearest airports from Periyar. The flights are available for the major cities in India as well as Middle East. Rail : The nearest major rail head is Kottayam (117 Kms). Kottayam has trains for major cities of the country. From Kottayam buses and taxis runs for Periyar. Road : Periyar is well connected by bus service to many towns in Kerala and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The distance of some major cities are Trivandrum(271 Kms), Cochin (200 Kms), Kottayam (117 Kms) and Madurai (140 Kms). Accommodation in Periyar There are plenty of accommodation options to suit the budget of travellers. Some of the famous hotels are Spice Village Hotel, Taj Garden Retreat and Lake Palace Hotel.
