About Ooty
The charming hill station of Ooty or Udhagamandalam, is situated amidst the magnificent Nilgiri mountain ranges. Popularly known as the 'Queen of hill stations' Ooty is one of the favourite summer resort of South India. The altitudes of Nilgiri mountains varies between 2,280 metres and 2,290 metres. The Doddabetta hill situated at a height of 2,623 metres is the highest peak in Ooty. Other hills are Snowdon, Elk hill and Club hill.

The hill station of Ooty is known for its orchards of peaches and plums, terraced tea plantations, eucalyptus and pine trees. Ooty hills changes its moods in different seasons, but its different moods provide similar hospitality to the tourists. The hill station sprawling along a picturesque plateau, with its green valleys and natural beauty offer a close affair with nature. Besides its pristine charm, Ooty hills offer several adventure options like trekking, hand-gliding and angling etc.

Tea and Tourism Festival
Ooty is famous for its Tea and Tourism festival, which is held in the month of January. In the festival the visitors can know much about the different flavours of their favorite drink tea. Makar Ponagal is another important festival celebrated in the month of January.

Major Attractions

Botanical Garden  ooty Botanical Garden : Botanical garden is a major attraction for the tourists who visit Ooty. The lovely garden was laid out in 1847 by Marquis of Tweedalie, the then governor of Madras. The Botanical garden spreads over an area of 22 acres, has more than 650 plant species, including a 20 million years old fossil tree trunk. The garden houses varied fauna, which consists of six sections comprising varieties of tree species, grass, ferns, multi coloured flowering plants, house ferns and orchids. The annual flower show is held here in the month of May.

Ooty Lake : The picturesque artificial lake was built in 1825, by Mr. John Sullivan, the then Collector of Coimbatore. Ooty lake was built in order to provide an irrigation tank to the people. Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation provide the boating and fishing facilities to tourists.

Dodabetta : The 2,623 metre high peak situated 10 Kms away from Ooty, is the highest peak in the Nilgiri range. The peak located at the confluence of the Western and Eastern Ghats, provide the breathtaking view of the Nilgiri hills and its surroundings.

Mini Garden and Rose Garden : The Mini Garden is situated on the way to the Boat house, where amusement park of the children is housed. A snack bar maintained by T.T.D.C is also available here. The Rose Garden lies about 3-4 Kms away from Charring Cross.

Government Museum : The government museum, is situated on Mysore Road. It has the collection of tribal items, district's ecological details and representative sculptural arts and crafts of Tamil Nadu. The museum was set up is 1989, with an aim to provide a close look of arts and crafts. to the local people as well as tourists

Kalhatty Waterfalls : The waterfalls are located on the Kalhatty slopes, about 13 Kms away from Ooty. Also known as the 'Kalahasti Falls' the water here cascades down from a height of 122 metres. The Kalhatty slopes is home to varied wild species, like panthers, sambhar, bison and wild buffaloes.

Coonoor : Situated at a distance of 17 Kms from Ooty, Coonoor is beautiful hill station. The 1,839 metres high station is known for its picnic spots and breathtaking surroundings.

Pykara Falls Kotagiri Kotagiri : Kotagiri, situated 28 kms away from Ooty, is the oldest of the three hill stations in Nilgiri ranges. This hill station is popular for its pleasant climate and green tea estates.

Madumalai Wildlife Sanctuary : Situated at a distance of 67 Kms from Ooty, the Wildlife sanctuary is home to several kinds of wildlife animals and birds. One can spot tigers, leopards, elephants, sambar, chital, barking deer, giant squirrels and flying squirrels here.

By Air : Nearest airport is Coimbatore airport, 89 Kms from Ooty. Coimbatore airport is connected to major cities of the country.

By Rail : Ooty is connected by narrow gauge line to Mettupalyam. Mettupalam is connected to Chennai, Coimbatore and other cities of India.

By Road : Good road connects Ooty to major towns and cities of Tamil Nadu and other parts of the country.
